Hi everyone, it's Angelica Hale, Kid Ambassador for the National Kidney Foundation!
On September 13th, 2019, I will be celebrating six years since I received a kidney from my mom! Since April is Donate Life Month, I thought what better time than now to start celebrating being 6 years #kidneystrong! That's why I created a Kidney Strong fundraising page. Please help me raise funds for the National Kidney Foundation's lifesaving programs for patients just like me.
If you don’t know my story, I was only four years old when I developed double pneumonia and experienced multiple organ failures. My kidneys scarred over and stopped functioning. In 2012 I spent 80 days in the hospital from February to April and about six weeks in a pediatric intensive care unit. I underwent many procedures and multiple surgeries. My parents had to take me to the hospital three times a week for dialysis since my kidneys were not functioning.
The search for a new kidney began while I was still in the hospital and both of my parents got tested to see if they were a match. While my father was not a match, my mother was, and she jumped at the opportunity to help me! She donated her kidney to me on Friday, September 13th, 2013, when I was six years old. We’re both doing so well!
Did you know that 1 in 3 American adults are at risk for kidney disease? Major risk factors include diabetes and high blood pressure. Kidney disease often has no symptoms, and it can go undetected until it’s very advanced. But two simple tests at your doctor’s office can tell you if you have kidney disease.
I’m donating funds raised through my transplant anniversary to ensure those who are facing kidney disease will reach more of their own milestones. I hope you can help me get to my goal!
